Relatively Minor
Laughter does not have to come from a major source. It could indeed be ... relatively minor.
I was looking out the kitchen window of my Winterset home this morning, daydreaming about the upcoming Thanksgiving feast, when I spotted three bushy-tailed squirrels on my neighbor’s deck interested in having a meal. While I hungered for a mouthwatering slice of roast turkey, fluffy mashed potatoes smothered in gravy, the all-time classic green bean casserole, and a glorious pumpkin pie, they were busily working on an exciting culinary adventure.
One squirrel strutted up to the corn cob affixed to the railing like it owned the place and began feasting on the yellow-gold kernels as if it were the find of the century. Meanwhile, a second squirrel approached, and a third looked down from the roof, still assessing the situation.
The second squirrel lingered nearby, sneaking in some side-eye glances at the corn-munching ringleader. It knew the pecking order all too well, and although moving closer, it maintained a respectful distance, aware that confronting the dominant squirrel over its valuable meal was unwise.
The third squirrel, however, had no qualms about taking a risk and dropped down from his perch, attempting to steal a few pieces of corn. The ringleader quickly noticed its intrusion and chased it away, chattering angrily. The second squirrel wisely chose to stay back and avoid any conflict. The third squirrel scampered off, its face full of corn, and was never seen again — the second squirrel watched from the shadows, content with its decision not to get involved. The first squirrel continued to eat, satisfied with its victory.
We are a bit more civilized as we gather with friends and family this holiday season. Unlike our furry friends, we can enjoy a delicious meal, celebrate a bountiful harvest, and avoid any dining table drama. However, three guests are preparing to fight over the last slice of pumpkin pie – the very final piece.
