Fair Enough
Laughter does not have to come from a major source. It could be ... relatively minor.
Sometimes life just isn’t fair. You can follow all the rules and still find yourself stuck in the slow lane behind someone cruising 15 miles under the speed limit. But for five glorious days each summer, life is fair, the county fair, to be exact.
And if you’ve ever wondered why the chicken crossed the road, we finally have an answer: it was late for the poultry show on the other side.
One of life’s great mysteries still lingers, though: Where’s the beef? Spoiler alert, it’s in another arena. The week-long event is a full-on livestock spectacular. But don’t let it get your goat; he’s still got a shot at a blue ribbon, or even the coveted title of Best in Show.
And don’t miss the pig show, it’s sure to be a swine time for all. The dogs, meanwhile, found a new leash on life as they wowed the judges with their best moves. It was a ruff experience for those more interested in sniffing out a pork chop on a stick than sitting, staying, or showing off their obedience skills.
The rabbits bounded into the ring, bursting with energy, but when faced with the agility course, they proved less than hop-timistic about clearing the hurdles. However, they made up for it by showing off their real superpower: rapid multiplication.|
A king and queen were crowned to preside over the festivities, dutifully distributing ribbons and making sure every animal received a fair shake in their respective contests. Meanwhile, the midway buzzed with games and rides that either spun fairgoers into a dizzying loop-de-loop or swayed them side to side like cornstalks in a summer breeze.
It was all fun and games until a bottle calf made a break for it, leading officials on a brief chase across the grounds. Rumor has it he’d had one too many bottles.
Life might not always be fair – but for one week in summer, it sure comes close.
