Relatively Minor
Laughter does not have to come from a major source. It could indeed be ... relatively minor.
Last Sunday, after the service at the First Christian Church in Winterset, I had a delightful conversation with another parishioner as we descended the steps. She mentioned how the hot and humid weather before noon made it the perfect day to go to the pool. However, she dismissed the idea, realizing that at her age, nobody would want to see her in a bathing suit. She shared some stories about her youthful days working as a lifeguard alongside good-looking male co-workers during her summers in college, which made me chuckle and visualize a tanned, muscular male in a bright red Speedo.
Fast forward to the middle of the week at my favorite restaurant in Des Moines. I often visit the eatery for lunch after singing lessons in a town further west. After I was seated by the hostess, I noticed a group of youth having a meal at the end of the room. They were all wearing the same color of shirt, so I initially thought they were a sports team refueling after a competition.
As I waited for my food to arrive after placing my order, the group at the back of the restaurant made their way to the front desk to pay. Just as the server delivered my enormous slice of carrot cake.
I was surprised to see that the group at the checkout wasn’t a sports team. Their white sweatshirts and red chest logo identified them as lifeguards from West Des Moines. I had to control myself from drooling all over my dessert as I witnessed these fine-looking gentlemen. Ashamed of my thoughts, I was thankful for the rainy day that brought them before me. It was a lighthearted moment, and I couldn’t help but think that the eye candy in front of me probably contained more calories than my dessert.

Thanks for the smiles and chuckles. And memories of days in a 2-piece swimsuit. Many decades ago!
